Being chosen as a Guardian is the best thing to have happened to Alexander, especially as he was chosen to be the Guardian of Honour. He sees this as making him better than a number of the other Guardians. Those he sees as worthless he often won’t work with, and this is part of the reason Max makes the choices he does, but one of the things Alexander is very good at is acting. He does his best to make himself seem more like Kate, one of the Guardians everyone looks up to, in the hope that will be enough to convince people he’s one of the good guys. Even Kate, to begin with, does believe he’s one of the good guys, at least until he decides to show his true colours after she rescues him. She does everything he can for him, and he still walks away without a glance back, believing she will get trapped in the last of the prisons.

When she doesn’t Alexander goes back to pretending. He acts as though he believes a lie the dark guardians told him, and when he does step through into the clearing he makes the decision he’s going to do what he can to make things the way they should be. Floyd’s belief there needs to be balance is enough of a reason for Alexander to start arguing against the way things have always been before, believing he can make things better for the Guardians, and when Kate makes the choices she does he’s even more certain of that. Her choices mean there are going to be more lesser Guardians, Guardians who should never have been chosen, and he wants to make sure that can’t happen. He wants the Guardians to be the right ones, and it’s obvious to him the Higher Power, if there even is one, isn’t make the right choices. If they were there would be far less ‘lesser’ Guardians.

Alexander, before he became a Guardian, was a very different sort of person, but he was one of those people who did let the power go straight to his head. It changed him in ways his people wouldn’t believe was possible, as he was once the most honourable of his pack, which was why he was chosen, and there was no reason for anyone to think he would change as much as he did. Unfortunately leaving his pack behind had more of an effect on him than anyone could have seen, and he went from being the most honourable to the most dishonourable of people, but managed to make it seem like he hadn’t become the person he was outwardly. As time passes it might come to be seen that he was never the person he was thought to be, but was instead one of the best actors. Until then he is the Guardian of Honour, and he has his own idea in mind as to how the Guardians should be.
