One of the younger Guardians, Floyd hasn’t been there for as anywhere near as long as some of the others when the world changes. This is why he is able to see things differently. He hasn’t been taught to see things in a certain way, and his friends, the people who know him the best are willing to listen to him when he tells them what he’s found out. He’s also the first to be chosen from his home world. As he’s taken the place of a Guardian who was much loved he finds it hard to create a place for himself at times, because there are a number of Guardians who view him as not being good enough, not being the same as the previous Guardian of Courage, and being the one to find out more about what it means to be a Guardian really doesn’t help with this. Sometimes he believes they want him to be in the position they give him, without asking any questions.

Floyd, however, has always been the sort of person to ask questions. He is one of the most inquisitive of his pack, and this is part of the reason he was chosen as the Guardian of Courage. Unlike the others he would put himself in danger in order to learn more about something. By doing this he taught them a lot about what they were, because they hadn’t known until then, and the world they were a part of. As a Guardian being a lion does occasionally have an effect on what he can and can’t do, but he doesn’t let that get him down. Instead he finds ways around the problems, which is another things he’s very good at, especially when he learns more about the magic of the world he is now on. From the beginning of his time as a Guardian he was looking into what he was capable of. This, in some ways, is another reason for his disconnection from the other Guardians – a lot of them don’t feel the urge to use the magic of their world for anything.

Like a number of the Guardians he is close friends with Kate. Unlike the other older Guardians Kate sees Floyd as a refreshing change, and she helps him with his magic. If it wasn’t for Kate it’s likely Floyd would never have truly fitted in with the Guardians, but this isn’t something that hasn’t happened before, so he wouldn’t have been unchosen. Instead he would have found his own place. Some of the Guardians who don’t like him much choose not to ask him for help, even if they might need it, while the others accept he is a Guardian, so his strangeness needn’t get in the way of what has to be done. When he’s the one to find the books about the history of the Guardians this does have an effect on things – especially how he views those who are more affected by the darkness. He sees differently to the others, and this is part of the reason he’s needed.
